Weight Loss Through Ayurveda - Controlling What, When and How You Eat Your Food

Obesity has almost reached endemic proportions in the USA, and the government worries how they will tackle this issue in the future. Obese people are at continuous risk and prone to life-threatening diseases like heart disease, high blood pressure, cancers, and type-2 diabetes. The projected expenditure for obesity by 2030 is a whopping $550 million for a projected population of just about 363 million at that time. Presently over 35% or 1 and 3 Americans are obese and they expect this figure to rise to 42% in the next few years. These statistics are frightening, are they not?

Compared to the Americans, the Europeans, in spite of their rich food, are shapelier and less prone to obesity, in spite of more regular intake of meats and rich creamy food including the highly weight inducing pizzas and pastas. Interestingly, several experts have pointed out that the Europeans do not put on weight because they follow a food discipline almost akin to the dictates of Ayurveda.

Weight loss is a subject of gigantic proportions and everyone is fighting his battle against obesity in his or her own way. Weight loss gurus are springing up by the second, advocating newer and more innovative commercial techniques to counter this problem. Weight training experts are also in the race, constantly striving to sell their systems and equipment to the gullible public.

However, in spite of the wide proliferation of innumerable packages for weight loss in the print and online media, there is none yet to compare with the centuries old weight loss systems advocated by the ancient Indian science of Ayurveda, passed down from generation to generation from the first Vedic founders of this practice. The difference between the modern weight loss methods and that of Ayurveda lies in the sheer longevity of Ayurvedic treatments that couple weight loss with general principles for the well-being of the soul, the mind and the body.

Primarily, the Ayurvedic weight loss regime demands a total change in lifestyle to begin with, including what, when and how you eat your food, the way you breathe and the exercises that you do to complement your diet.

Ayurveda, India's ancient system of rejuvenation supports the need for a harmonious relationship between your life and the changing faces of nature. Ayurveda claims that the soundness of your diet depends on three important factors, which are, what you eat, when you eat, and how you eat. While many of you will seriously consider what you eat, have you given any thought at all, to the equally important aspects of, "when" and "how" you should eat?

All along, we have indulged in every permutation and combination including, reducing fats, carbohydrates and controlling our intakes of calories, and increasing proteins and adopting every other trick in every weight loss plan that came to our attention. We have little results to show for this. The principles of weight loss outside Ayurveda has been undergoing constant change with the times, starting with Dr. Atkin's protein diet without carbohydrates, and then came the 80% carbohydrate diet promising to reduce weight while eating what you liked.

In all this time weight-loss through Ayurveda stood undaunted and steady. Their system survived because of their more balanced perspectives on not only what to eat but also how and when to eat. On the subject of, "what you eat," Ayurveda recommends that you eat the food of the season, for example, in winter eat nuts and grains, in the spring go for leafy greens berries and sprouts, and in the summer go for cool fruits and vegetables, which will maintain a balanced harmony between your body and nature.

On the subject of, "when to eat," Ayurveda prescribes six small meals per day and shuns any snacks between the meals. The vital question of, "how to eat," is extremely important, as you must commit both your body and mind to the food you eat. Having food on the move, as most busy people do, does not nourish either your body or your mind and you are unable to enjoy the taste of the food and the spiritual and physical benefits of a balanced diet.

In short, you can achieve a good weight loss only by properly metabolizing your food intake, which in turn will burn calories and excess fats, by eating the right things in the right manner at the right time. Complement it with good exercises, including yoga and deep breathing and most importantly sufficient intake of water and a good eight hours of sound sleep.
